Nobody ever had to teach a Black & Tan Coonhound about the night shift.
He came knowing.
Long before somebody invented punch clocks, overtime, fluorescent lights, or coffee strong enough to stand a spoon in, the Black & Tan was already reporting for duty after sundown.
Night Shift Since Forever.
That pretty well tells the whole story.
By daylight, he may look temporarily unemployed. He’ll occupy a porch, investigate the kitchen, find the coolest patch of floor in the house, and conduct himself like a fellow whose calendar is completely open.
But wait until dark.
Then those long ears come off standby.
The nose goes to work.
And suddenly there are tracks to examine, hollows to investigate, creek bottoms to patrol, and nighttime characters whose whereabouts apparently require immediate attention.
No supervisor is necessary.
The Black & Tan has been working this shift for generations.
Rain doesn't cancel it.
Mud doesn't postpone it.
And midnight certainly isn't quitting time.
Because some dogs were made for fetching slippers.
Some were made for sitting pretty.
And some were made to throw their nose into the night, disappear into the timber, and let the whole county know when they've found what they went looking for.
