There are dogs who prefer a warm bed, a dry coat, and a sensible understanding that freezing water is best admired from shore.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has never been troubled by this philosophy.
The Cold Water & Trouble Edition celebrates the Chessie as he was meant to be remembered: wet, determined, surrounded by marsh grass, and carrying a duck as though somebody had finally given the day a proper purpose.
Developed along America's Chesapeake Bay, the breed was shaped for serious waterfowl work. Cold water, rough conditions, long retrieves, and miserable weather required a dog with strength, endurance, intelligence, and a coat capable of making winter water somebody else's concern.
The Chessie's distinctive dense, oily double coat helps protect him in cold conditions, while his powerful build and natural retrieving ability made him particularly suited to demanding work around the Bay. But equipment alone does not make the Chesapeake. There is also the matter of character.
And the Chessie has plenty.
He is loyal, confident, hardworking, and sufficiently independent to occasionally give the impression that your instructions have been received and are now under review.
Which brings us to:
“Lover of Cold Water, Dead Ducks, and Trouble.”
The marsh water, cattails, decoys, duck blind, calls, working gear, and mallards aren't decorations so much as pieces of the Chessie's résumé. At the center stands the dog himself—soaked to the skin, duck in mouth, and looking perfectly satisfied with an arrangement most civilized creatures would call unpleasant.
