Developed in Leonberg, Germany, the Leonberger grew into an impressive working and companion breed known for its enormous frame, distinctive dark mask, abundant coat, intelligence, and remarkably steady temperament. Despite the lion-like appearance, this is a breed admired for being affectionate, devoted, confident, and closely connected to its family.
Leonbergers are also notably capable swimmers, making the combination of mountain country and cold water especially fitting for a breed that carries considerable strength beneath all that hair.
