Developed on the island of Newfoundland, Canada, the breed became closely connected with fishermen and life along the rugged North Atlantic coast. Its heavy build, webbed feet, dense water-resistant double coat, and natural ability in the water helped establish the Newfoundland as an exceptional maritime working dog.
But strength is only half the story. For all its impressive size, the Newfoundland is cherished for being patient, devoted, steady, and remarkably sweet-natured; the combination that earned this enormous working dog its reputation as one of the classic gentle giants.
