There is good water, which civilized men admire from a porch, and there is bad water; cold, muddy, wind-beaten stuff that sensible creatures generally leave alone.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has always preferred the second kind.
The Bad Water Edition celebrates the Chessie as a true American working retriever: powerful, determined, weather-resistant, and possessed of the peculiar belief that a freezing marsh becomes considerably more attractive once somebody throws a duck into it.
Developed around the Chesapeake Bay, the breed earned its reputation working in demanding waterfowl conditions. A dense, oily double coat helps protect the dog in cold water, while a strong body, endurance, intelligence, and retrieving instinct provide the machinery necessary to keep going when easier dogs might begin negotiating for shore leave.
But the Chesapeake is more than equipment.
He has opinions.
Chessies are known for loyalty, confidence, determination, and an independent character. They can be deeply devoted to their people without feeling obliged to surrender every question of judgment to them; which is useful when the water is rough, the weather has turned disagreeable, and the bird has landed somewhere no reasonable person wishes to visit.
Hence the line:
“A Good Dog in Bad Water.”
The artwork puts that idea where it belongs: the Chessie in the water, mallard in mouth, surrounded by marsh grass, decoys, flying ducks, and the weathered landscape of a working waterfowl dog.
