The Bay-Bred Edition celebrates an American retriever shaped by the hard conditions of the Chesapeake Bay; a dog developed to work around cold water, rough weather, marshes, waterfowl, and men who considered staying home merely because the weather was disagreeable a defect of character.
The Chessie is a substantial, muscular retriever with a distinctive dense, oily, water-resistant coat, traditionally found in colors that blend naturally with deadgrass, sedge, and the brown tones of its working environment. That coat was not provided for decoration. It belongs on a dog expected to enter cold water, retrieve birds, come back, and, if necessary, do the whole unreasonable thing again.

The breed is known for strength, endurance, intelligence, loyalty, and determination. A Chesapeake can be affectionate with its family while retaining an independent streak that suggests cooperation is best understood as an agreement between two interested parties.
