The Plott Hound was not built for peaceful negotiations.
He came out of the Carolina mountains, bred to hunt bear and boar in country where the hills are steep, the timber is dark, and damn near everything has thorns, teeth, or a foul disposition.
That suited the Plott just fine.
Give him a faint track, point him toward the rough country, and he'll supply the rest. He's got the nose to find what passed through yesterday, the legs to catch what left this morning, and the peculiar courage to arrive at the end of the trail and introduce himself.
Most dogs, when confronted with something considerably larger and meaner than themselves, will stop and reconsider their position.
The Plott considers that cowardly bookkeeping.
Which brings us to the old saying:
"That Old Plott Done Found Trouble Again.”
It's not an accusation.
It's more of a weather report.
Because sooner or later, a Plott is going to put that nose to the ground and discover something that would've been better left undiscovered.
A bear.
A boar.
A fresh track disappearing into black timber.
Something big enough to make a sensible dog turn around.
And that's usually about the time the Plott starts having fun.
